Fashion needs a wake up call

The rise of “Fast Fashion” has increased the threat of climate change and the sustainability of higher end brands prompting numerous companies to go bust, leaving hundreds unemployed.

To keep down costs Fast Fashion companies import large amounts of low quality materials from impoverished countries, including polyester containing plastic. Therefore, leaving behind a greater carbon footprint contributing to increased global warming, than the likes of higher-end and designer brands who opt for locally sourced high quality materials.

Last year, Pretty Little Thing infamously released a bikini set that included dye that would leak when worn in water, releasing many harmful chemicals. Former 19-year-old Stella McCartney, Mary Katrantzou and Vivienne Westwood Employee stated that “This lazy and profitable way appears to be the main reason why fast fashion will continue to destroy the environment. People don’t care about the long lasting effects seriously enough and will always choose cheap quantity over the quality that more sustainable brands purely because their price tags are deemed unreasonable”.

John Doe's opinion on the matter became personal when he was told about the closure of Topshop, his current place of employment. He believes that Fast Fashion Websites have played a role in multiple companies going bust. “Online brands like Missguided have taken over the market and recently put brands like Topshop and Debenhams out of business by being able to produce more product without the cost of running a store and paying for staff”, he says. Will this competitive ladder formed by these fast fashion brands lead to the demise of the high street?
